The African-English composer and conductor, Ken Burton wrote “Reflections on Tallis ‘Loquebantur’”in 2017. His credits include the choirmaster for the soundtrack of the 2018 movie Black Panther. Like Tallis, Burton draws inspiration from the Pentecostal story told in “Loquebantur”, but in a much more literal way. His chose text from several psalms, which, like in the Tallis, are introduced as solo lines. The musical setting breathes life while combining seven different modes, or scales, that are part of the musical languages of people from around the globe. Maintaining the original seven-part voicing, he features Ionian, Aeolian, Major Pentatonic, Arabic, Lydian, Hungarian, and Mixolydian modes—seven different musical “languages” sung simultaneously.
O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare Thy praise.
Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done.
My tongue shall sing aloud; my tongues shall declare Thy praise.
(Psalm 51:15, Psalm 35:28, Psalm 40:5)
