UC San Diego Health performed its 4,000th pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), a lifesaving surgery to clear the lung’s arteries of scar-like tissue that robs patients of their ability to breathe. Sheila Holt was the milestone patient and needed the life-saving surgery to treat CTEPH.
UC San Diego Health pioneered the surgery and has performed more than any other institute in the world.
