With Bertie Fisher having long since wrapped up the 1996 title, a host of drivers were out to claim their first international win on the Cork 20 with the local trio of Liam O’Callaghan, Frank O’Mahony and Liam McCarthy being the hot favourites. O’Callaghan surged into a massive lead but a dramatic mechanical failure in the closing stages ended his rally allowing Gabriel Snow to pounce and claim his one and only international win.
