A general introduction to engineering geology; an engineering geologist plays a crucial role before construction of buildings, roadways, bridges, homes and other civil structures. An engineering geologist investigates and logs subsurface conditions by inspecting materials exposed by exploration equipment or natural exposures. The strength, texture, density and other characteristics of soil and rock are determined, and suitability for construction is assessed. If conditions and characteristics are unsuitable, mitigation and ground improvement measures may be recommended by the engineering geologist and geotechnical engineer.
