In this narrated tutorial I am hand tinting a black and white photo of the Leucadia Post Office with acrylics on canvas. The flag turned out a bit too dark in the black and white version so for that I painted in the colors with opaque acrylics.
It was printed at 24x16 inches with my Epson P20000 on Breathing Color's Gloss Crystalline canvas. I hand colored the image by making glazes with acrylic medium and acrylic paints from Golden.
Leucadia is old Greek for Sheltered Paradise or Place of Refuge (named after the Greek isle Lefkada in the Ionian Sea). It is believed Leucadia was founded by British spiritualists around 1870. They named the streets after Greek and Roman gods such as Vulcan, Hermes, Glaucus, Hygeia, etc. Bee farmer Nathan Eaton initially called the area Eatonville in 1875 and it has also been briefly known as “Merle” in the late 1800’s, named after a son of railroad superintendent E.B. Scott. Leucadia has its own post office at the corner of Hwy 101 and Phoebe St, which was built in 1956. This photo will be in my new Encinitas coffee table book.
Hand coloring or hand tinting is an old technique from the days of black and white photography. I hand color my photos with a variety of media on a variety of substrates (i.e. oils on photo paper, oils on canvas, pastels on matte papers, water colors on water color paper, acrylic on canvas like here, etc.)
