Sungei Wang Plaza or "River of Gold" was one of the oldest malls in Malaysia. Built in the 1977, it was a popular spot for both locals and tourists, thanks to its diverse of retails back then. But as newer malls around its vicinity started sprouting out, can it still compete in this modern era?
Back then, Snugei Wang Plaza used to be the place to be , it has Malaysia’s first Olympic-sized ice skating rink and a roller skating rink, bumper cars, etc. The mall underwent several renovations over the years, including major refurbishments in 1992, 2013, and most recently in 2020.
Newer malls in the vicinity like Pavilion, StarHill Gallery, offered more luxurious shopping experiences and attracted top brands and customers base away from Sungei Wang Plaza.
Today, Sungei Wang Plaza is still brings a lot of nostalgia for many Malaysians, especially for those who grew up before the turn of the millennium. However, given the fierce landscape in Malaysia's retail space. Can Sungei Wang Plaza remain alive or dead?
