In Episode 2 of my Alice in Wonderland diorama series, I’m painting a checkerboard spiral illusion designed to feel like it’s pulling you down the rabbit hole.
I start by painting a bold black-and-white checkerboard on a 12×12 inch basswood panel using acrylic paint. Once the pattern is established, I switch to oil paints—Payne’s Gray and titanium white, subtly tinted with yellow and brown. This layering and blending process softens the contrast and adds depth, making the spiral appear as if it’s actually descending toward the center.
The goal is to create an optical illusion that feels dimensional, whimsical, and slightly surreal—perfect for the Alice in Wonderland world I’m building. This video focuses on depth, value shifts, and painterly blending techniques that transform a flat checkerboard into something that feels endless.
If you’re interested in optical illusions, checkerboard patterns, surreal painting, or diorama building, this episode is for you.
