Wheat Rust Life Cycle/Disease of Field Crops

Types of Rust
Spores of wheat rust are 5 (PAUTB) pycnia, aecia, uredia, telia and besidia
In the macrocyclic all five spores (pycnia, aecia, uredia, telia and basidia) are formed.
In demicyclic rust uredia are not produced.
In microcyclic rust only telia is produced.
Macrocyclic rust may be either heteroecious or autoecious but microcyclic rust is always autoecious.
Genus Puccinia is extremely host specific and obligate parasite.
Difference between autoecious and heteroecious rust
The key difference between autoecious rust and heteroecious rust is that autoecious rust is a parasitic fungus which can complete its life cycle on a single host species (e.g.coffee rust), while heteroecious rust is a parasitic fungus that requires two or more host species to complete its life cycle.

1. Black (stem) Rust:-Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici
Obligate parasite,26 races in india, New race from Uganda-UG 99
Heterosious rust Barbery (Alternate host)
Uredospore & Teliospore on wheat
Pycnidial & aecial stage on Barberies, Mahonia
Uredospore infect wheat on lower leaf surface and teliospore on Upper leaf surface
Basidiospore infect Barbery (Alternate host)
Aeciospore infect on wheat on lower surface
2. Orange/Brown/Leaf rust :- Puccinia recondite, Puccinia triticina
Heterocious rust
Alternate host Thalictrum spp.
3. Yellow/Strip rust :- Puccinia striformis
Heterocious rust
Alternate host Agropyron semicostatum, Bromus cathaticus, Hordeum murinum
