Tensions Mount as Algeria Orders French Officials to Leave | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Algeria has ordered 12 French officials to leave the country. This move comes after French authorities filed charges against an Algerian consular official last week. The consular, along with two other Algerians, is accused of being involved in the kidnapping of a high-profile critic of the Algerian government in Paris last year. Algeria has called the arrest a "vile" act. It has particularly blamed French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau for stirring up tensions with the country. This escalation comes just as both nations were working to repair their fractured relations. Last month, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to resolve issues. Algeria-France ties have worsened since France recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara, where Algeria has long supported the Polisario Front's fight for independence.
