Impressions of Shanghai
Shanghai, abbreviated as "Hu," is also known as "Shen." Approximately 6,000 years ago, the western part of present-day Shanghai emerged as land. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, legend has it that Shanghai was the fief of Lord Chunshen (Huang Xie) of the State of Chu; hence, the city earned the nickname "Shen."
This work was composed to commemorate Lord Chunshen’s contributions. Upon being reassigned to this vast territory, he established townships across the modern-day Shanghai and Suzhou regions. He governed the Shen River, dredged waterways, and suppressed floods. His illustrious political achievements earned him the deep devotion of the people.
The piece is structured into five movements: Rubato, Adagio, Allegro, Cadenza, and Adagio.
I. Rubato In the misty wind and drizzle, the then-undeveloped Huangpu River was cursed by the local people as the "Dead-End River" due to its stagnant flow.
II. Adagio The Huangpu River suffered from severe siltation. During flood seasons, both banks were ravaged by inland flooding. The vast plains between Dianshan Lake and the East China Sea—today’s Shanghai metropolitan area—were then a desolate expanse of marshland with sparse population.
III. Allegro Lord Chunshen recognized the inherent value of this land. Aiming to transform the wetlands into fertile fields and a granary, he took the initiative to request King Kaolie of Chu to reassign his fief to the Jiangdong Wu region (modern-day Changzhou, Suzhou, and Shanghai). This relocation was a monumental turning point for the region, accelerating the development and historical progress of Shanghai. His efforts in dredging rivers and controlling water led the people to name many local landmarks after him. For instance, Junshan in Jiangyin is also called Mount Huang, and the Huangpu Port and the abbreviation "Shen" both serve as lasting tributes to Huang Xie.
IV. Cadenza This movement depicts the tragic later years of Lord Chunshen. In a turn of political misfortune, he was forced to surrender his wife to another, and ultimately met a gruesome end by the sword.
V. Adagio A reprise of the second movement, this section utilizes the dadi to create a poignant contrast. It reflects on the Huangpu River—once cursed as a "Dead-End River"—and the tragic fate of Lord Chunshen, who achieved great feats only to die a violent death.
What is the ultimate meaning of success and fame in a person’s life? While we must never forget Lord Chunshen’s great historical contributions, his tragic end invites us to reflect deeply on what we truly pursue in life. This piece, “Shen,” is dedicated to the memory of Huang Xie, the Lord Chunshen of the State of Chu.

上海，簡稱“滬”，別稱“申”。 約6000年前，現在的上海西部即已成陸。 春秋戰國時期，相傳上海曾經是楚國春申君
的封邑，故上海別稱為“申”。
以此作品紀念春申君黃歇來在改封的廣大地域內分設都邑，在今上海、蘇州一帶，治理申江，疏通河道，抑制水
患，政績顯赫，深得民心。
該曲分為五段Rubato 、Adagio 、Allegro 、Cadenza 、
Adagio。
第一段（Rubato ）講述著微風細雨中，當時還未開發的黃浦江邊，被當地百姓咒為“斷頭河”。
第二段（Adagio ）講述著黃浦江這條小江嚴淤塞，兩岸豐水期內澇成災，澱山湖與東海之濱的廣袤原即今天的
上海市域，一片沼澤，人煙稀少，滿目荒涼。
第三段（Allegro)講述著當時的春申君黃歇看出這塊土地的價值，他把這塊澤國變成沃，變成他的糧倉，其主動向楚考烈王請求改封江東吳地（今常州、蘇州、上海一帶），請封江東，對於江東無疑是件興事，大大推進了江東尤其是上海的開發建設和歷史發展，治理申江、疏通河道、抑制水患、政績顯赫，深得民心。故此，當地人紛紛以其姓或號為許多山、水、地方命名，如江蘇省江陰市君山也叫黃山，今天上海的黃浦港，上海簡稱為申，都是因
紀念黃歇而得名。
第四段（Cadenza）講述著春申君黃歇在晚年時期，無奈將妻子拱手讓人，但最後還是慘死刀下。
第五段（Adagio)，為該曲第二段的再現，將起初當地百姓咒為“斷頭河”的黃浦江與慘死刀下立大功的春申君黃歇作對比，以大笛的方式演奏。
人的一生，功成名就為何？我們不可忘記春申君黃歇在歷史上的偉大貢獻，但他的結局也可讓我們深刻省思人的一生追求為何。以該曲《申》紀念楚國時期的楚國人春申君黃歇。
