My recently acquired 1045 would constantly maintain a low voltage. I kept on putting it off until one day the batteries completely died. We eliminated the batteries, the ground, the generator, and finally determined the root cause to be the voltage regulator.
I would rate this as a medium DIY project. I give it this rating simply because of the different steps that needed to be taken and not because it's hard or anything.
