This video discusses in detail the Millikan's oil drop experiment and how Millikan was able to obtain the charge of an electron and prove that charge is quantised. The experimental apparatus is discussed at the beginning and then the procedure for the experiment is detailed. The physics of the experiment is discussed with relevant equations. A complete derivation for determination of charge of the oil drop is provided. Stoke's law is introduced and discussed contextually. The historical context of the Millikan's oil drop experiment following the measurement of charge to mass ratio of the electron by J.J. Thomson is mentioned. Millikan was one of the several scientists that tried to measure the charge of the electron which happens to be the fundamental charge. The electron happens to carry the same magnitude of charge as the fundamental charge albeit with opposite sign. Any other charge quantity can be expressed in terms of this fundamental charge thereby proving charge quantisation. Millikan's biographical details are discussed in brief towards the end of the video. It is hoped that the video will be helpful to both the students of Physics as well as its enthusiasts.
