L56: Desert landforms due to Wind deposition- Physical Geography for UPSC Prelims

Summary :
Dunes: Hills of sand formed by accumulation of sand & shaped by the movement of winds. They may be active, constantly on the move , or inactive fixed dunes, rooted with vegetation.
A. Barchans : crescent shaped . Live dunes and advance steadily. Occur transversely to the wind , so that their horns thin out & become lower in the direction of wind. Windward side is convex & gentle slope while leeward is concave and steep.
B. Seifs: Lying parallel to the direction of prevailing wind. May attain height of 200 ft.
