Here are my Keys to Success for a Split Cup Wandering Straight Pour:
1. One of the great things about straight pours for beginners is that consistency is not as important. If you want clearly defined colors and lines, your mixed paints should be on the thicker side - it should leave a trace when drizzled off of your stir stick and should fold over itself leaving a mound on a mound. If you want more blending of colors, the consistency should be a little thinner, still leaving a small mound but disappearing quickly. For this technique - thicker is better.
2. Let your paints sit for several hours before using them to reduce the amount of air bubbles when you pour. As a general rule, the thicker the consistency of your paints, the longer it takes for the bubbles to rise through the paint and release. For thicker consistency paints, I let them sit (covered) for about 24 hours before using them. For thinner (dutch Pour) consistency, I let them sit for at least 6 hours.
3. If you're using a transparent color as a base, make sure you pre-paint the sides of the canvas. The paint layer on the sides gets very very thin because gravity forces most of it to drip off. The white canvas will show through a transparent color if you don't cover it first.
4. When layering the split cup, you can use multiple colors in each chamber, but I usually prefer to fill each chamber with one color. Remember to alternate dark and light colors, and bold contrast is great for this technique.
5. For the straight pour, hold your cup 8-12" above the surface when you pour, which will create that delicate feathering. It's going to feel like you're pouring from too high, but you're not. Wander around the pour to create motion and don't just go in one direction - play around and change directions to create different shapes. As the paint leaves the split cup, the flow gets slower, so slow your motion too.
6. I used a base coat this time, meaning that negative space was inevitable. I knew my poured colors were going to be bold, so I used a neutral grey colored base to add a grounding element to the color scheme.
7. Thicker consistency paints move more slowly, so take your time with the tilting. If you move the paint too quickly, the little delicate lines will warp and distort. A slow tilt will give you more control over the composition.
8. I highly recommend using more paint than you think you need. The more these lines stretch out, the more the details emerge. So give yourself enough paint to move it around and really open it up. To figure out how much paint I need, I use this formula: Length x width of the canvas divided by 28. For this 20"x28" canvas, the math says I needed 20 ounces of paint... but I used 25 (not including base coat)
9. Remember to scrape the drips off of the underside of your canvas (or any painting surface) edges and corners. These drips can continue pulling paint off of the top of your canvas and change your composition. Scraping off the drips breaks the surface tension and stops the 'pull' of the paint in that direction.
