Spherical trigonometry is an extensive subject and could easily be a separate course in Mathematics. It is widely applied in both Astronomy and Geodetic Astronomy. In Geodesy, although the Earth is often modelled as an ellipsoid, there are instances where we must approximate it as a sphere to simplify mathematical derivations.
In this video lecture, the concept of the great circle is explained, followed by the definition of a spherical triangle. Additionally, the two well-known rules of sines and cosines for a spherical triangle are discussed.
