Pandemics are largely psychological phenomena. As we’ve witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the spread or containment of a virus is influenced by people’s beliefs and behaviours. Our emotions and beliefs also influence how we imagine a post-pandemic world.
Drawing on historical archives, as well as current research at UBC and other institutions, this lecture outlines the likely scenarios of life in a post-COVID-19 world.
Steven Taylor, PhD, is a professor in the UBC Department of Psychiatry, and is the author of more than 300 scientific publications and more than 20 books. He released his most recent book, The Psychology of Pandemics: Preparing for the Next Global Outbreak of Infectious Disease (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2020), just a few weeks before the COVID-19 outbreak. Dr. Taylor is a member of the Canadian Federal Government’s expert advisory panel on COVID-19.
