From Saint Jean Pied du Port I cycled up the French west coast to Royan, then went inland to Niort. There I came across the V43 La Velo Francette cycle route which runs between La Rochelle and Caen (and beyond). A beautiful route through the French countryside along green ways and rural roads, passing through villages and medieval towns, and often along rivers such as the Loire. From Caen I continued east along the coast and inland up to the Belgian border.
