How to Draw & Cut an Arch in Wood

In this video I will be showing you a couple of different ways how to draw an arch layout on a piece of wood. For this I am required to do a large arch that comes out from the back each, this arch will extend out to the edge of the wood so it’s full depth is maintained. This is a laminated pine panel, 3/4” thick, 48” wide, and 20” in depth. This is being used for a wall-mounted table in a kitchen. Other methods out there involve putting nails into the wood, however I’d like to avoid putting holes in this panel. #homeimprovement #woodworking #kitchen

First was making reference points, both for the sides as to where I want the arch to start and then the center of the panel.

For the first method, I can use something bendable. For this I have a large length of spring steel. This can be traced out, make sure whatever you’re using can bend evenly, but it may be hard to work with if you don’t have an extra helping hand which is why I prefer my second method instead.

For the second method, I fully marked out the center of the panel to make an alignment reference on the opposite side of the arch.

Then a piece of wood is used to put against the panel. Something long enough that I can adjust the distance and radius of my arch.

That wood is then held square to the edge of the wood, a large square is used for this.

A screw with a string attached then fastened into the wood. Try to use a string that doesn’t have much stretch.

A loop is made on the other end and this is where a pencil is put in place, then the arch is traced out. Clamps were also used to help stabilize the piece of wood on the floor so there was minimal movement.

Reference marks can then be made on various portions of the arch on both the left and right sides to ensure it’s symmetrical.

After that, the arch is then rough cut out using a jigsaw and finished with a belt sander.
