How an MBA Turned into a Furniture Manufacturer & Published a Book on Furniture -The journey - Ankur

Log kehte hain - zero se business start karna is difficult -
I say its easiest to start a business from Zero -
it's difficult when you start your business from a negative financial situation.

It was 2008. Our family business of exporting Home textiles & Garments – for international hotels, offices, and brands – was thriving with a turnover of 50+ crores. But we all know what 2008 was about: with the international market crashing all around us, we went from 50cr to 0 in a matter of one year.

Giving up - was not an option - it was time to survive - and keep your head above the water - The international market was so volatile - I thought if this is not working let's try the domestic market. So I started my interior design business in 2010. Why interiors?

In the first 10 years of my entrepreneurship journey, having exhibited and worked in Paris, Sweden, Barcelona, Madrid, frankfurt & Others - design capitals of the world – I got exposed to some beautifully done-up spaces. why can we create spaces like this back home?

This is what lead me to start Total Interiors solutions in 2010 - and I started selling - what I knew best at that time - textiles.

One thing lead to another and I got into the interior projects & furniture manufacturing business - OUR 25-year-old factory which was making - textiles - home furnishings & garments with tailors was now making custom furniture for the domestic market with carpenters & polishers.

I was lucky that i got married to Vineeta who hails from COONOOR, near OOTY - the lush green hills famous in Chhaiyya Chaiyaa and Kapoor and sons. She happened to be an interior designer – this was by chance not by choice, even though sometimes I think destiny tha!

And she has been my real secret of success. With her expertise and my experience in the space, we went all in into Interiors. I respect her, thank her and love her - for she stood by me through everything and we take every choice forward together.

For example – we made a bed for a client - which was to be used by the daadi in the house - and after installation - it was too low for her and was giving her discomfort in getting up from the bed - and we had to re-do and adjust the height to a very non-standard height and then it got sorted after.

We put this in a checklist - to ask about the preferred height to the user of the bed.

But what about the millions of others - who were making this purchase decision every day - they would end up - burning time / money / taking the wrong decision? The client is not just unaware, but gets more and more confused with every sales and interiors person selling them a different story - and just coming under pressure ki padosi ya rishtedaar ke ghar mein jo hai, hum waisa hi le leta hai, kaam khatam.

I know I will never reach millions, even if our business gets wildly successful.
