Predjama castle stand as the marvelous structure which the biggest cave castle in the world and is cosidered one of the 10 most fascinating castles in the wolrd.
The position of the castle made it almost impregnable.
The castle was inspiration for George R. R. Martin and appeard in altered look in of episode of Witcher series.

The castle is first mention in 1274 under a name Luegg under a rule of Luegg noble family also know as Knight of Adelsberg.

In the 15th century the castle was a seat of robber baron Erasmus of Lueg which plundered local area.
Erasmus was killed in the long siege and popular legend tells us that he was betrayed and shot by one of his men while sitting in lavatory, sounds familiar ?

Oberburg family aquired castle In 1511 after siege, the second castle built by Purgstall family was destryed by earthquake.
In 1570 the castle was rebuild in Renaissance style according to a plans of the original castle and its appearance mostly did not change to this.

In 18th century castle became a summer residence for Cobenzl family and in 1846 the castle was sold to Windischgrätz family who owned the castle intil Second World War.

After that castle was nationalized and is in possetion of the state to this day.
