Dear all this is to show how you oil the 201as its an oil ONLY machine (apart from the motors were a special grease is used for the wicks).
Precision oiling is called for and different amounts of oil to be placed in certain points on the machine. Singer designed it so that in some areas the oil was to flow through the machine using gravity and centrifugal force along with small reservoirs for the oil to slowly pass into certain parts of the machine. Adding grease to the gears (which you should never do on a 201) and other points of the machine stops this process and allows the machine in certain points and areas to run dry of lubricants, causing wear and early failure of that part be it gears, shafts, bushings etc. On some machines like the 221 you do grease the gears but they are on a different lubrication maintenance schedule.
I use Singer oil and have done for 15 years now and have found it excellent.
