Tucked away in the mountains near Hedley, BC, the Upper French Mine is a relic of the area’s rich gold mining past. This marks my third visit, diving deeper into its tunnels, structures, and history.
The French Mine group was part of Hedley’s booming gold rush era, with activity dating back to the early 1900s. While not as famous as the nearby Nickel Plate and Mascot Mines, it was one of many smaller operations attempting to strike it rich in the Stewart Mountain range. Over time, mining operations ceased, leaving behind tunnels, old equipment, and an eerie reminder of the past.
In this 16-minute video, I return to see what remains, venturing into the darkness of the Upper French Mine to document its current state. What stories are hidden in these abandoned tunnels?
