I pull myself up the last few steps and the trapdoor slams shut beneath my feet. My hands are shaking so badly I can barely slide the iron bolt across. It's old, rusted, but it holds. For now.
The bell tower is smaller than I expected. Maybe twelve feet across, octagonal, stone walls thick enough that I can barely hear the screaming from below anymore. Just muffled sounds. Scraping. The occasional wet thud of bodies throwing themselves against the wooden door at the bottom of the spiral stairs.
