半世纪前的加冷河臭气弥漫、沼泽遍布，与今日的水运中心形成强烈对比。郭庭水自述童年住在河边浮脚屋，十一户人家挤在狭小空间，虽艰苦却因屋舍摇晃、孩童嬉闹而充满温情。他回忆海上游牧的海人常以舢板来此换货。1956年独立桥动工时，他与孩童帮忙搬土石；桥上石狮象征独立精神，并成为电影《独立桥之恋》取景地。他和伙伴甚至合买一张戏票，轮流混入影院观看。
Over fifty years ago, the Kallang River was foul-smelling and swampy, a stark contrast to today’s hub for water sports and major performances. Kwek Theng Swee recalls growing up in stilt houses crowded with eleven families, where hardship mixed with the joy of swaying homes and playful children. Sea-nomad traders, the Orang Laut, frequently came by sampan to barter goods. When the Merdeka Bridge was built in 1956, he joined other children in helping move soil and stones; its lion statues symbolized Singapore’s spirit of independence. Featured in the 1959 film Love on Merdeka Bridge, it even inspired him and friends to sneak into the cinema by sharing a single ticket.
