As Dr. Baxter Discussed in our last video, At Synergy Radiology, we treat pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) with the minimally-invasive Ovarian Vein Embolization (OVE). In this video, he will discuss what ovarian vein embolization is, how the treatment is performed, what to expect during treatment, the potential risks, and more.
What is ovarian vein embolization, and how is it performed?
At Synergy Radiology, an ovarian vein embolization (also known as OVE), we go through a hip or neck vein, and we use a catheter or wire and inject coils to close off the backflow.
We can keep you overnight at Synergy due to our partnership with Memorial Hermann and give you I.V. medication to help ease the pain. You are not required to stay overnight. However, we recommend that you stay overnight so that we can monitor and help you relieve your pain.
What should I expect during the OVE procedure?
Ovarian vein embolization procedures usually last around 60-90 minutes in total. During the procedure, you can expect moderate sedation. The only thing you will typically feel during the procedure is where the lidocaine is injected. You may feel pressure from the vein access.
Once the medication is injected into the vein, you may feel slight pain or discomfort due to the medication shutting the vein down and diverting blood from the treated veins. This pain is maintained with medication.
We can also use general anesthesia for people who want to be completely sedated for the procedure.
Risks of ovarian vein embolization procedures
The most common risks are pain, bleeding, and infection. However, we are cautious in how we use the devices that we use to block the vein. But there is a chance that the coil can become loose and head toward the lungs. However, we use state-of-the-art technology and meticulous care to ensure this does not happen.
OVE Procedure recovery time
The recovery time for the OVE procedure is relatively quick due to the small size of the incension. Most patients typically go home the next day after a whole night of monitoring.
Over the next few days, your pain will start to decrease. You can begin your daily light activity (walking, going upstairs, driving, etc.) the next day after your appointment. We recommend not doing any heavy lifting (anything heavier than 5 pounds) or strenuous exercise.
The success rate of OVE
Our experience matches studies where 70-90% of patients experience relief even after five years of the treatment date.
