Transcatheter Heart Valve Overview

TAVR stand for - Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): a nonsurgical treatment option. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is sometimes also called transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). TAVR is designed to treat, aortic stenosis (AS). Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is minimally invasive heart surgery performed to replace narrow aortic valves in the heart. TAVR/TAVI enables you to return to routine activity more quickly than open-heart surgery.

Myval THV Overview

Myval is a hybrid honeycomb cell design Transcatheter heart valve which is CE & CDSCO approved. The upper half of the valve has an ‘open’ cell design which ensures that the coronary blood flow is not affected and the lower half has a “Closed” cell design which provides high radial strength and effective anchoring support. The unique ‘hybrid honeycomb’ valve design allows your doctor to accurately place your new heart valve at the natural position. This precise positioning ensures that there is no conduction system disturbance thus eliminating the need for a new pacemaker as seen with previous technologies. The valve frame is made up of a Cobalt alloy frame for high radial strength & radiopacity. The tri-leaflet of the valve is made up of bovine pericardium which is treated with Meril’s proprietary anti calcification treatment technology. The frame is covered externally with PET skirting to plug microchannels & further reduce PVL (Para valvular Leak). There is a presence of an Internal PET sealing cuff for minimizing PVL & puncture resistance. It comes in various sizes starting from 20 mm, 21.5 mm, 23 mm, 24.5 mm, 26 mm, 27.5 mm, 29 mm, 30.5 mm* , 32 mm XL Sizes

Myval THV Usage in TAVR with a brief overview of the case

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is the nonsurgical option. This technique is a life-saving treatment modality for patients who are unwilling or at risk to undergo open-heart surgery. This novel, the interventional technique is somewhat similar to angioplasty and is done in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath-lab).

The Myval-THV TAVR (Heart valve) is a biological tissue valve designed to work like your own heart valve. It is available in multiple sizes and your specialized Heart Team will determine which size is right for you. Various clinical studies have shown Myval TAVR procedure to have a lower incidence of death and stroke compared to open-heart surgery. TAVR may shorten recovery time to allow patients to get back to everyday activities. Patients have reported quality of life improvements within 30 days including the ability to take care of themselves.

Patient history:

57-year-old male, known hypertensive, NYHA class II dyspnea, Underwent CABG in 2013, severe aortic stenosis, STS score4.6 (More details in the video)

Life after Myval THV Placement

You will be shifted to the ICU after your procedure. You will remain here for 24-48 hours or until you become stable. You will be closely monitored here and will undergo a detailed physical examination involving some blood tests, a chest X-ray, an ECG, and an echocardiogram (24 hours after the procedure) to ensure that your recovery is proper.

Once you are stable, you will be transferred to the patient room where you will be kept for another 1-2 days. In most cases, patients begin walking within a day of their TAVR procedure.

Avoid lifting heavy objects, excess bending stretches, push or pull activities for two weeks.
Begin by trying to walk for 5 minutes daily after discharge. Then, gradually increase the duration as per your convenience.
Try performing 10 sit-to-stand repetitions daily without hand assistance. It is all-right to slowly climb stairs.
