In the pursuit of racial equity and mobility justice, transportation systems play a critical role in ensuring access to “third places” such as parks, barber shops, beauty salons, libraries, and churches—spaces that are foundational to Black cultural life, social cohesion, and well-being. Decades of disinvestment, however, coupled with recent policy shifts that prioritize efficiency and economic return over equity, have diminished transit access to these vital community assets and. Part of a larger pattern of spatial injustice affecting historically marginalized communities nationwide, transportation barriers to third places deepen exclusion and disconnection from community life. This session will focus on the intersection of transportation equity and social infrastructure, examining how policy decisions, funding allocations, and leadership priorities shape access to third places. Panelists will explore how these dynamics, both historically and contemporarily, limit mobility for Black communities while also highlighting opportunities to reclaim and reimagine access. The conversation will emphasize actionable strategies to ensure transportation systems support inclusive, culturally affirming infrastructure across neighborhoods.
