Welcome back to the channel. This part 2 of my experiment with using historical flat irons. In part one I examined restoring a late 19th century iron I had purchased at an antique store. See link below. Today we are trying to press different fabrics and fiber types with this iron so see what I can learn.
I spend some time ironing handkerchief linen, fustian, silk, and a wool/ poly blend. One of my biggest takeaways from this experiment is how much hands on experience you need. If you were ironing large amounts of fabric I could also see using 2 irons as helpful. One to heat while the other is in use.
These irons get too hot to use with synthetic fibers!
I hope you enjoy watching me using my antique iron while I try to understand how they would have worked historically. If you have also done a similar experiment, let me know in the comments below.
If you are inspired to try this please make sure you are taking precautions for your personal safety and fire hazards. I have not listed this as a kid friendly video because of the safety risks you might have with minors.
This style of flat iron started use during the late middle ages and was popular until the invention of electric irons in the late 19th century.
