Third extended part of our manufacturing video • Double Shot Polyurethane Keycaps showing a technique of making a double-shot polyurethane keycap.
This part shows the manufacturing of silicone moulds: This particular technique of making double-shot keycaps requires two sets of moulds for each key. The first set of moulds consists of a cone and a cavity that are used to make the legend insert. The second set of moulds (again, a cone and a cavity) is used to make the keycap—in this case, the cavity defines the final shape of the keycap and the cone defines the mount (in this case the Alps mount). The silicone used in the process is Smooth-Sil 945 by Smooth-On.
