EEDI stands for Energy Efficiency Design Index, a mandatory measure by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to promote the use of more energy-efficient equipment and engines on new ships, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
--------------------
EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index) and CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) are IMO regulations aimed at reducing carbon intensity in shipping, with EEXI focusing on the design efficiency of existing ships and CII on operational efficiency, assessed annually with ratings from A to E.
--------------------
CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator):
Purpose: To measure and improve the operational carbon intensity of ships.
Focus: Annual operational efficiency, assessed by measuring grams of CO2 emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile.
Applicability: Ships of 5,000 GT and above.
Implementation: An annual indicator, with the first round of CII ratings issued in March 2024 for the previous year's data.
Rating System: Vessels are rated on a scale of A to E, with A being the most efficient and E the least.
Incentives and Penalties: Vessels with poor CII ratings (D or E) may face penalties or be required to develop carbon reduction plans.
