Open D tuning lets you play guitar and keep your nails, because you can play basic chords "flat-fingered". Flat-fingered playing doesn't work in standard tuning. Chord shapes are different and you can't press them down without your nails getting in your way. Your fingers lean into neighboring strings, deadening them, and your chords sound terrible.
You need an alternative approach that lets you play flat-fingered and sound good. Open D tuning gives you that. This video demonstrates why long nails don't work in standard tuning, and why you need to change up the conventional way of learning guitar. Check out the other videos in the playlist to learn how Open D tuning lets you play guitar and keep your nails!
