Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is a painful condition in the upper extremity that occurs when soft tissues in the shoulder joint become trapped. It's caused by a narrowing of the subacromial space, which is the passageway beneath the acromion, the bony extension at the top of the shoulder blade. This narrowing can happen when the arm is raised overhead, and can impinge on the rotator cuff muscles, bursa, and biceps tendon.
