Minister Muyingo Tells Striking Teachers
It's now the second month since the third term began in accordance with Uganda's school calendar. However, during this crucial term, teachers announced industrial action due to salary disparities, particularly affecting arts teachers. It's worth noting that the third term is vital, especially with promotional exams and transitional exams, such as the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) for primary level and the Uganda Secondary Education Examination (USE) for lower secondary schools.
Speaking to the press on Monday afternoon at the Media Centre in Kampala, the State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, urged protesting teachers to return to the classroom, citing the government's agreement to enhance their salaries in a phased manner. The minister emphasized that the government has been engaging with teachers and will increase their salaries.
Muyingo advised teachers to reconsider the plight of learners and return to the classroom, emphasizing that teaching is a calling. He made these remarks while updating the country on the progress of the Uganda Secondary Education Examination (USE), which marks a milestone in shaping Uganda's educational future and socio-economic transformation.
The minister expressed readiness for the exams and urged all stakeholders involved to uphold professional conduct and desist from any examination malpractice.
