I never quite imagined we could be addicted to the security of named diets.
Did you?
I've been looking forward to this chat with Melissa Craig. It did not disappoint!
After suffering from chronic fatigue and multiple diagnosed food allergies, she fell hard into rigid diets:
paleo,
Ray Peat and
high-fat carnivore.
Each approach yielded some benefit but had unique shortcomings when pushed to the extreme.
Then, she found my book and the Optimising Nutrition community.
In Glucos Signals, she initially used her glucose to better understand her metabolism and balance energy from carbs vs fat, somewhere between the extremes.
Next, she dove into our 20/20 Macros and 20/20 Micros classes and learned to nourish her body rather than simplistically depriving it of 'bad things.'
As her new foods satisfied her cravings, she started to feel energised and got active, eager to make up for decades of having no energy to be active and build muscle. After losing a ton of body fat, she had to eat more to keep the weight on as she became stronger.
Before our chat today, I was most intrigued by her quest to be anti-fragile and stretch herself just a little to make continual, sustainable progress.
But the fascinating revelation from our chat was what she learned from our Mindset Mastery course: She realised that she had spent decades putting her hope and faith in the magical named diets.
Even though she had found food freedom—prioritising foods that nourished her rather than just avoiding the prescribed 'bad foods'—she thought she would retreat to the security of the named diet.
After putting in some work and soul searching, she realised that this belief was no longer serving her, and she has moved on to complete food freedom. Nothing is off limits or 'bad'; instead, the question is: 'will this nourish me and empower me to on my quest to be anti fragile'.
