I Built the Rarest Cast Net in the World… And It Actually Works!

Come along with me as I rebuild one of the most historic and elusive cast nets ever created. Out of every net I’ve designed, tuned, and thrown, this one challenged me more than any other — not because it was complex, but because it was nearly extinct.

This design comes from a tiny corner of the world:
the Pacific Islands, where ancient fishing traditions were forged in deep water and violent surf. Hardly anyone has ever seen this net in person, let alone fished with one. Online? Forget it. There’s practically zero information, no tutorials, no footage, no blueprint.
It’s a ghost net — a relic whispered about, but never shown.

I had the lead mold for over six months before I finally stumbled across a single photo of a handmade Hawaiian net using these weights. That one image unlocked a secret that had been hidden for generations… and I knew the path forward.

I’ve built enough nets to trust my instincts, so I mapped out a game plan and got to work. But I wasn’t ready for what came next. Because this net?
This thing turned out to be lethal.

The moment it hits the water, it doesn’t sink — it drops.
Hard.
Fast.
Unstoppable.

It tears straight to the bottom with a speed I’ve rarely seen. Suddenly, I understood why this design is prized across the Islands: it can muscle through waves, currents, and chaos that would fold a normal net in half. This is a net meant for real ocean conditions — where you throw on top of the fish, not near them, and trust the design to dominate the water.

But all power comes with a price.

This net is a shoulder breaker.
A full day of throwing it will humble you.
It hits the surface so hard it can spook fish if you’re not careful.
And the pocket system, while traditional, isn’t as efficient as the Sniper Net Pocket — a few mullet slipped out… though plenty didn’t.

But when you factor in the Fun Factor, the heritage, the raw energy of throwing a net built from lost tradition?

It’s one of the most satisfying nets I’ve ever thrown — a true piece of cast-net history brought back to life.
