“I had to do it… I just had to.” -Dick Proenneke
Those words echoed in my mind when I made the decision to leave everything familiar and come to Alaska. I didn’t know exactly what I was searching for — only that something deep inside me needed to find out if I could do it.
In this episode, I share an unexpected and unforgettable experience: a spontaneous flight over the Cook Inlet and into the heart of the mountains, where one of Alaska’s most iconic wilderness cabins sits quietly at the edge of a turquoise lake.
Built by hand in complete solitude, this cabin stands as a symbol of simplicity, craftsmanship, and connection to the land. I share a bit of its history, the man who built it, and how the spirit of this place stirred something in me.

Later on, I set off on my first solo hike — into the stillness of the forest and along the river.
