Happy New Years folks.
If you are considering starting a fitness journey this may be a good food for thought video. There are pros and cons to any exercise style, but maybe this will give you something additional to consider.
Today's workout emphasized considerations for non/unconventional training and their transfer to functional training.
To start, what is non/unconventional training? In my experience I would consider kettle bells, hammer/maces/clubs, and sandbags as part of nonconventional training. I would push calisthenics and classic barbell/dumbbell and machine based exercise into conventional training.
These implement based trainings are gaining in general popularity due to the variety of challenges you can provide yourself with one weight/implement. Additionally there is maybe a greater emphasis on longer duration activity.
I have heard of some mace/hammer/club based workouts pushing for over 100 reps in a row. Why is this relevant?
When I was outside clearing the snow how many times did I swing that shovel? How many times did I have a perfectly square squat/hinge position. How many times were my legs offset and emphasizing greater rotational patterns over sagittal or horizontal? I do not have an exact number but over two hours I would say a lot.
What dabbling into non/uncongenial training may give you is that dad/farmer strength you are looking for. Where not only can you learn to pick up heavy things but you can keep going for more than a few reps.
Do I think me dabbling in both types of training helped me with the snow? Absolutely, no doubt. But I saw more of a functional carry over from swinging a mace than I do just deadlifting.
Food for thought if you are considering expanding your exercise borders.
