A powerful westerly weather system has intensified over the Kashmir Valley, triggering fresh concerns of heavy snowfall and strong winds from the night of January 26 to the evening of January 27. Weather conditions have already begun to deteriorate across several parts of the valley, with cold winds, dense cloud cover, and falling temperatures signaling an approaching spell of severe weather. According to the Meteorological Department, the system is expected to bring moderate to heavy snowfall across most areas, including the plains, while higher reaches may witness intense snowfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds. The peak intensity is likely on January 27, which could disrupt daily life, transport, and essential services. Authorities have advised travelers to check highway conditions before journeying, especially on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, and residents in upper areas have been warned to stay away from avalanche-prone zones. Farmers and orchard owners have also been asked to suspend agricultural activities until January 28 as a precautionary measure.
