11.21.2025 | 11:22 PM | SANTA ANA - A pursuit suspect was shot with less-lethal ammunition before hiding inside a church but eventually surrendered, late Friday night.
The pursuit began when Irvine police attempted to stop a red Honda Civic for a vehicle code violation near Barranca Parkway and Red Hill Avenue around 11:22 PM.
The driver of the Honda failed to yield, leading officers on a slow-speed pursuit that traveled westbound into Santa Ana.
The driver turned north and came to a stop in front of a church located in the 2500 block of South Main Street where he continued to argue with officers.
The man threw objects at the church prompting a woman, later identified as his wife, to exit the church and also interfere with law enforcement.
Less-lethal 40MM ammunition was used to strike the man twice prompting him to hide inside the church and blast music while his wife was briefly detained.
After about 20 minutes the man exited the church and surrendered to law enforcement.
Medics evaluated the man on scene but he declined treatment or transport to a hospital. His wife was released without charges.
Both directions of South Main Street were closed while police attended to the pursuit termination.
