Vyjayanti Mala was born on August 13, 1936 in Madras i.e. Chennai. His father's name was M.D.Raman and mother's name was Vasundhara Devi. Vyjayanti Mala's mother Vasundhara Devi was also a famous dancer and actress of South India. In such a situation, Vyjayanti Mala got a lot of support from her mother in making a career in films.Vyjayanthimala did her first stage show at the age of five. She studied in a Christian school in Chennai. At the age of seven, he was selected for a show that was to be held in Vatican City in front of the Pope, the highest religious leader of Christians. He surprised everyone with his brilliant performance. In this show she presented traditional Indian dance. Vyjayanthimala learned Bharatanatyam from Guru Vazhuvur Ramaiah Pillai. Apart from this, he also acquired knowledge of classical music from Manakkal Shivaraja Iyer.Vyjayanthimala debuted in her acting career at the age of 13 and her first film was a Tamil film named Vazhakai and this film was released in 1949. Actually, the co-director of this film, MV Raman had seen Vyjayanti Mala dancing on the stage. It was then that he saw a lot of potential in this young dancer. He requested Vyjayanthimala's grandmother to let him act in the film. Although she was not in favor of films, but MV Raman somehow convinced her. The film Vazhakai became a huge hit. MV Raman also started making Telugu and Hindi remakes of his Tamil hit films. He made Jeevitham, a Telugu remake of Vazhakai, and gave a chance to Vyjayanthimala in that too. After this, he cast Vyjayanti Mala in the 1951 Hindi film Bahaar, which was a remake of Vazhakai. And thus he made his debut in Bollywood also. The male actors changed in the films made in all three languages, but Vyjayanthimala remained involved in all of them. All three films proved to be superhit and with this Vyjayanthimala became the first South Indian actress who did not have to dub her dialogues. It is said that he had learned Hindi to speak dialogues in this film so that he could get fully involved and work in Bollywood.After this, the hit pair of Dilip Kumar-Madhubala was seen in the 1958 film Madhumati. Vyjayanthimala played three roles of Madhumati, Madhavi and Radha. There is an incident related to the shooting of this film of Bimal Roy which had a bad effect on his health and ability. Actually, there was a dance sequence in the film which was being shot in the hilly area of Nainital. The director's orders were that they had to dance barefoot. During the shooting, a piece of stone got pierced in his foot due to which he had to face a lot of trouble in the further shooting. Despite this, she performed the dance scene so beautifully that she became famous as the twinkle toes actress.
Many records are associated with Madhumati. Along with India, the film was also screened at the International Film Festival in Prague in 1958 and was the first film to be screened abroad. It was also the Indian entry for the Oscars that year. The film received a total of nine Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Direction, Music, Singer, which remained a record till 1994.
In India too, it was included in the five highest-grossing films of the decade. The huge success of this film based on rebirth started the tradition of such films which included Milan, Mehbooba, Kudrat, Karz and Om Shanti Om etc. and all of them established new dimensions of success.When there was a complete break up with Dilip Kumar, then Vyjayanti Mala's name was linked with Raj Kapoor in the media.
