The chemicals causing movement of the insects away from their source are called insect repellents.

Repellents act through behavioural responses like stimulators of the olfactory receptors, chemoreceptors and gustatory receptors.

These are of four types:

(a) Physical repellents. Water, oil, tar etc.

Water is put in trays and is kept under almirahs of sweets to avoid ants.

(b) Chemical repellents

(c) Natural repellents

(d) Synthetic repellents

Repellents protect animals and plants from harmful insects.

Examples:

(i) Oil of camphor and cetronella is used as mosquito repellent.
(ii) Cresole is used to protect timber from termites.

(iii) Bordeaux mixture is used to repel chrysomelid beetle and plant feeding insects.

(iv) Pyrethrum repels blood sucking insects.

(v) Dimethyl phthalate repels Anopheles mosquito, ticks and other blood sucking insects.

(vi) Deet (Diethyl tolumide) repels mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and biting flies.
