Cycling to the beach (Leiden to Katwijk)

In this video, we ride from the city centre of Leiden to the beach at Katwijk aan Zee. Leiden is a historical city with a lovely centre full of canals, museums and students. It's also an excellent place to get around on a bike. We cross underneath the train tracks near the station, and move through the hospital and university campus. Because the video was recorded on a Sunday, there are not a lot of students or workers here. I imagine that on weekdays the place would be much more lively. At the end of the campus, we go through an area that's still being developed into offices and research facilities. Around Leiden, especially to its northwest, there are a lot of villages that have grown into a long stretch of suburban houses. Even so, these villages have kept much of their original identity, and in the video it is clear how different they feel. In order, we pass through Nieuw-Rhijnzicht (a very recent development in the village of Oegstgeest), Rijnsburg, Katwijk aan den Rijn and Katwijk aan Zee. In Katwijk aan den Rijn, there seems to be some sort of village festival going on, and all the streets are decorated with bunting. The last village, Katwijk aan Zee, has a distinct fishing-village feel. The sea barrier that separates the village and the beach was only finished in 2015. It's a dyke masquerading as natural sand dunes, with a car parking garage underneath and numerous pedestrian crossings.
