Labour welfare plans: Starmer facing rebellion over billions in cuts

Sir Keir Starmer is launching a hearts and minds operation to keep Labour MPs on side as the Government plans five billion pounds of welfare cuts.

Many backbenchers are said to be concerned about the proposals - which include tougher tests for a key disability benefit and big changes to the way universal credit is calculated.

Charities say that the plans will have a ‘catastrophic impact’ and warn that 700,000 more disabled households would end up in poverty.
