When the hallowed halls of the Glimmerlight fell to the Progbarians, Peter Phippen fled to Wisconsin, where he took refuge amongst the humans and played bass in a band called Airkraft. Yet the deeper pull of the Patchoulilight soon made itself known. Phippen found himself drawn not to circuitry or sequencers, but to the flute - the most breath-bound of instruments, poised between body and air. In the late 1980s and early ’90s he recorded three cassettes shaped by this choice, including 1993's EP Breath / Pulse.

The authoritarian ways of the Progbarians left Phippen with a lifelong distrust of authority, and this resistance found quiet expression in his tapes. The Progbarians instructed those they subjugated to reject the evidence of their own eyes and ears - their final, most essential command. It was a directive Phippen refused. In Breath / Pulse, listening itself became an act of defiance: a reaffirmation that what is heard, felt, and breathed could not be overwritten.

The Sagegazer knows that no power endures which demands the denial of one’s own perception.
