I'm testing two trees both called "honey" with completely opposite survival strategies: honey locust spreads roots far and wide near the surface, racing to grab water before it dries out.

Honey mesquite sends a taproot straight down, sometimes 150 feet deep, searching for underground water that never runs dry.

Honey locust is the sprinter, when conditions are right, it claims ground fast. But when moisture stops, so does growth.
Honey mesquite is playing the long game, spending energy underground to find water that makes it truly drought-proof. With bedrock at 30 feet, mesquite has a realistic chance of hitting perched aquifers.

The question: will speed and reach beat depth and persistence?

One month later, the results surprised me. Some strategies worked, others failed completely, and the winners weren't always what I expected. This experiment revealed crucial lessons about desert tree survival that could change how I approach restoration.
