Foam Beetle Fly - Best Panfish Fly? - McFly Angler Fly Tying Tutorial

Foam beetle flies are flies that every panfish fisherman should know how to tie, or at least have some in your box. They are small enough to fit in the little sunfish mouths, yet still entice even the larger fish to strike. Ive even caught bass on this fly. The other great thing about these flies is, when tied with the dubbing and not the peacock hurl, the fly is very durable, withstanding multiple fish strikes. And that is saying a lot, considering how tough sunfish can be on flies. They have very sharp little teeth, and always rip flies apart. But this fly does seem to withstand them more than most.

So if you haven't tied this fly before I highly suggest you giving it a try. It will be one of the easiest flies you will ever tie, and the material list is short and cheap. You can buy fly tying specific foam, or get many swatches of multiple colors online or at craft shops for cents on the dollar compared to fly tying foam. The foam is called Eva foam, and you can get huge sheets of it for cheap. Rubber legs also are very inexpensive, and so is dubbing. So for the cost of basically just the hook, with a few cents added for all the other materials combined, you can tie up a very effective fly. And you can tie these so quickly and easily, that you can fill a box in just an hour or two, and have a blast fishing for sunfish at your local pond.
