I got a couple questions about picking your rap voice and style. I’ve come up with a few different factors to consider when trying to create your own unique rap voice.
One is what comes naturally to you. Yes, we can work on our voices, but we also have to be aware of what we start with. Record yourself and listen back. Get used to your voice but also look for things you can improve on. Also, try lots of different things so you can figure out your range as well as your natural talents. When you’re first starting try an aggressive delivery and a laid back delivery. One with lots of enunciation and one that’s a bit more slurred. Experiment and find out what you like and what sounds good.
One is the sound you want. Once you understand your voice, you need to figure out what style you’re going for. Do you want to tell stories or make club music? Do you like soft piano beats or heavy ones with lots of bass? Do you like instrumentals that are rapid, or ones that are slower? Knowing what kind of music you want to make will dictate the kind of voice or style that will sound best over it. For example, a preference for a soft delivery will really struggle over heavy, fast beats as the music will drown you out.
One is who you look up to. After you understand those two things, listen to artists you like and look for styles and strategy you can implement and expand on in your own way. Established artists have been making the type of music you want for years. Don’t copy them, but do learn from them. For example if your favorite artist has great wordplay and that’s what you want to mirror, then learn from them and focus deeply on wordplay.
On top of that, you need to understand your skills and unique background. What’s your story or angle? How are you going to stand out? What can you do better or differently than everyone else? Which rap skills are your strengths? Maybe it’s wordplay, maybe it’s rhyming, maybe it’s flow. It doesn’t matter, just higure out how all these factors interplay to make the music you want which also helps you stand out. Don’t try to copy someone else. Create your own sound.
I wish there was an easier way or some perfect steps but art is fluid so there’s no one correct rap voice. There’s no way to get around it, you have to practice a lot and keep trying different styles until you find what fits you best. Play around with your voice. If you don’t experiment and push yourself, you may never find a style you’re comfortable with. Hope that helps!
