Lesson 9 of the Esalen Series uses the 5 Cardinal Lines of the human structure to awaken our awareness of the most basic fundamental relationship that largely remains unconscious: our center of mass (COM), held within the pelvic bowl, our base of support. This lesson allows the participant to track the center of mass (COM) by experiencing the presence or absence of downward pressure as the Cardinal Lines of the legs alter the base of support.
Recovering awareness of this dynamic relationship invites the discovery of counter-rotation and reorganization of the body's anatomical midline or Vertical Cardinal Line. A healthy and responsive midline and COM bring safety, balance, and pleasurable exertion with activities of daily living like getting down to and up off the floor, climbing stairs, and walking on unleveled surfaces.
A responsive midline and center of mass bring solutions to every base of support challenge. ~ Carol Montgomery
The Esalen Series ~ Fundraiser for Integrative Learning Center This video is one of 15 Awareness Through Movement Lessons based on Dr. Feldenkrais' 1972 Esalen written and audio transcripts. Using the original lessons as a guide, Carol Montgomery uses her language and application of functional movement patterns to discover perhaps the underlying question, "what knowledge was Dr. Feldenkrias trying to impart that will help us move and live a better life?" It has to be more than just "bending, extending, turning, or rolling," right? How could we all apply these great lessons to our present life?
