Edited US Air Force Research Laboratory video explaining its program to develop a new type of turbofan engine that changes cycle to combine high thrust for take-off and supersonic acceleration with fuel economy for cruise and subsonic loiter. General Electric and Rolls-Royce Liberty Works will ground-test ADVENT demonstrator engines in 2013, GE and Pratt & Whitney will do follow-on groiund demonstrations in 2016 under the AETD program. The engines designed under AETD could power the F-35 JSF after 2020 and any 2030-timeframe sixth-generation fighter the US may develop.
