I Broke Down in My Van… and the RAC Left Me STRANDED!

On my way to the Yorkshire Dales, I heard a horrible rattling from the engine — pulled over to find my fan belt shredded to bits. No problem, I thought — I’ve got two breakdown covers. Except… one of them (RAC) left me completely stranded.

First call was to the RAC (on a family plan my dad put me on). After nearly 30 minutes trapped in automated nonsense, I finally spoke to someone — only to be told I was only covered abroad or travelling to a port. That’s not true at all. We’ve been paying for full cover, plus extra for abroad, for years — and they still left me stranded. My dad’s furious — he’s cancelling the policy and demanding a refund.

Thank goodness I kept my AA membership. Within a minute of filling out their online form, they had someone on the way — with live updates, texts, and even a phone call to say he was 10 minutes away. On a Sunday bank holiday, he diagnosed the problem fast, went to get the parts, and had me back on the road in under 3 hours. Friendly, professional — and honestly, he made what could’ve been a nightmare situation feel completely safe.

Poor Savannah (my Maine Coon) was stuck inside through all of this — she didn’t get outside until 2:30pm, and our entire day was thrown off. Forget the Dales; I ended up parking at one of my local spots instead, where she stayed out until midnight to make up for it.

A stressful few hours, and a huge relief I kept my own cover. If I’d relied on the RAC alone… this would have been a very different story. I’ll never use the RAC again.

AA to the rescue — can’t fault them. No wonder they reach 85% of breakdowns within 45 minutes.
